Deadly Weekend I-30 Crash Claims Another Young Life
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - The parents of two sisters, who died in a car crash Sunday, made the heartbreaking decision to pull their six-year-old son off life support after he spent all night in extremely critical condition at Cook Children's in Fort Worth.
Sunday afternoon, the family's gold Dodge Stratus stalled in the left lane of Westbound I-30 near Highway 161 in Grand Prairie. The family dialed 911 for help. But before officers arrived, the driver of a Ford F-150 slammed into the back of their stranded vehicle, where all 4 siblings were sitting.
Maria del Refugio Gonzalez, age 12, died almost immediately. Her older sister, 13-year-old Diana Gonzalez, died Sunday night at Cook Children's.
Their younger sister, Maria de Jesus Gonzalez, who goes by Mari, age 10, remains in critical condition.
The youngest child, 6 year-old Jesus Gonzalez, was in extremely critical condition. Late Monday afternoon, Irving ISD officials confirmed that the parents requested that Jesus' teachers from Brown Elementary to visit him at Cook Children's before they pull life support.
Joe Moreno, principal at Lamar Middle School, where the two sisters attended school, informed their teachers and students of the tragic news.
"I had a difficult time with our teachers this morning. We care and we get very close to the kids so they were quite shaken," said Moreno.
Counselors were available for students at Lamar Middle School and many students utilized the service.
Grand Prairie police said it's unknown if the driver will face any charges.
The crash is still under investigation.
