Deadly Domestic Violence Cases Has Mayor Calling For Change
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Recent school shootings across the country and deadly domestic violence cases locally has prompted leaders in one North Texas city to call for change.
In relation to the handling of mass violence and domestic violence cases, Mayor Mike Rawlings says the increasing numbers of incidents in Dallas are unacceptable.
Rawlings is now calling on city officials to get off the sidelines. The mayor is now asking Dallas police to double efforts to arrest domestic violence offenders. "At any one time…we've got 60 warrants that all of our police force have go to deal with. That's a lot of people to track down," he said. "And I'm asking that these warrants be given the highest priority, along with murders in this city."
During a press conference at City Hall the mayor said the city must get more involved in the crackdown on domestic violence and fight to get assistance for those with mental illnesses.
The mayor also called on the male citizens of Dallas to stop tolerating abuse against women by other men. "We as men must collectively have a zero tolerance of that attitude of ambivalent acceptance of any despicable behavior by our male neighbors," he declared.
Mayor Rawlings said the recent rise in fatal domestic violence cases in Dallas is unacceptable. The most recent incident occurred over the weekend when a Dallas man was arrested for stabbing his wife to death and just last week DPD officers a husband after he shot his wife to death in the parking garage at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
At the same news conference, Mayor Rawlings referenced the recent American mass shootings and said it's also time to tackle the issue of mental illness.
