Darvish Won't Play In World Baseball Classic

ARLINGTON (AP) - Yu Darvish says he won't play in the World Baseball Classic next year.

The Texas Rangers right-hander and Japanese star released a statement Tuesday, saying he made the decision after much deliberation, including consultation with his coaches and trainers.

Darvish says the most important thing for him is to get ample rest while preparing for the 2013 season. He cited his substantial workload over the last few years and changes he endured moving to play in the United States.

During the 2009 World Baseball Classic when Japan won for the second time in a row, Darvish was 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 13 innings.

Darvish says his ultimate goal is to win a World Series with the Rangers. He also thanked everyone for "their understanding with his decision.''
