Darvish Cleared To Continue Offseason Program Following MRI
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) — Texas Rangers starter Yu Darvish is on track to participate in his off-season throwing program after an MRI revealed improvement in the pitcher's nerve irritation in his lower back.
Darvish, who was in Dallas for a follow-up appointment with team Spine Consultant Dr. Drew Dossett, will work out in Texas for a few more days before returning to Japan.
The MRI indicated that the inflammation from the nerve irritation in his lower back has subsided. Darvish began experiencing symptoms in early August, but chose to pitch through the pain as opposed to missing a start.
"He chose not to have the injections because it would have required him to miss a start, and he did not want to do that," said General Manager Jon Daniels following the season. "He wanted to take the ball every five days and I commend him for that."
The right-hander was given an injection in his back just two days after the season ended before returning to Japan.
The team says Darvish will continue with a core conditioning program to strengthen his back.
In his second MLB season, Darvish finished second in AL Cy Young voting, going 13-9 with a 2.83 while striking out a league high 277 hitters.
