Darvish Among Three Finalists For AL Cy Young
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- Texas starter Yu Darvish may not win the AL Cy Young, but the Rangers' ace is already among elite company in club history.
Darvish joins RHP Max Scherzer of the Detroit Tigers and RHP Hisashi Iwakuma of the Seattle Mariners as the three A.L. finalists.
In 2013, Darvish led the league with 277 strikeouts, averaging 11.32 per nine innings. The right-hander finished the season 13-9 with a 2.83 ERA, the fourth lowest in the AL.
The second-year pitcher limited opposing batters to an AL-low .194 average over 209.2 innings in 32 starts.
Darvish, who finished 9th in 2012, is guaranteed to finish within the top three and will become the first Texas pitcher to do so since Ferguson Jenkins finished second in 1974.
No Rangers pitcher has ever won the award.
Detroit's Scherzer, the only 20-game winner in 2013, is considered the front-runner after finishing the season 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA and 240 strikeouts.
Iwakuma finished the season with consecutive wins to improve to 14-6 with a 2.66 ERA and 185 strikeouts.
The winner will be selected by the Baseball Writers' Association of America and will be announced on Nov. 13.
