DART Rolls Out New Bus Model
GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas Area Rapid Transit rolled out its new model of bus on Monday morning, with the first stop being the DART station on Walnut Street in Garland. The 40-foot long bus was made by North American Industries, Inc. in Alabama, and sports a lot of new features including much bigger windows and screens that show off the bus route and stops.
But security measures are among some of the most impressive new features. Four cameras watch over the bus and its passengers -- pointing back at the riders, forward at the street, down at the driver and at the bus entry door. Also, drivers now have a door that can be closed shut for protection if an unsafe situation erupts or riders become too loud.
Other new features include multiple levels and more spaces for passengers in wheelchairs. The new bus is also more environmentally friendly, using compressed natural gas.
"I think it's very, very amazing. I'm glad to see this is what our money goes towards. I like it. I like it very much," said Marsillis Terry, one of the first to ride on the new DART bus. "I've been riding it for 24 years, so I depend on it a lot."
DART has ordered 459 of these new buses, in hopes of replacing their entire fleet over the next three years.
