DART Plans 2nd Line In Downtown Dallas

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas Area Rapid Transit is moving forward with plans for a second line in downtown Dallas. Construction could begin within a few years and many people support the expansion. However, some others are worried about its impact.
Board members voted late Tuesday night to develop the new light rail route. DART is asking for $400 million in federal funds the create the second downtown line.
A spokesperson for DART stated that Young Street and Jackson Street are the preferred routes to connect western downtown Dallas to the Deep Ellum area.
But some businesses, apartment buildings and a downtown Dallas church have all been against the idea because of the impact it could have on their properties. They have been encouraging DART and the City of Dallas to look for alternative routes.
DART has promised that other routes will be explored, as required by the federal funding process.
It could still be years before anything is finalized, including what properties would be impacted. If the plan continues forward, construction could begin in 2017 and the new line could be open by 2021.
