Dansby Resigns As FWISD Superintendent
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The Fort Worth Independent School District is looking for a new superintendent. In a move that angered and surprised many people at Monday night's board meeting, Walter Dansby stepped down from his position as the chief of Fort Worth schools.
A crowd of supporters gathered outside of the meeting on Monday evening. Dansby entered the closed executive session to cheers. That meeting ended just before 10:00 p.m. and dozens of people waited outside for more than four hours to learn the outcome. That is when the cheers turned to jeers.
Employees and parents learned that Dansby resigned during the very emotional meeting. This coming Monday will be Dansby's last day leading the school district. His retirement officially begins on January 31, 2015.
The school board voted 6-3 in favor of accepting Dansby's resignation.
The special session on Monday was called to discuss the superintendent's employment contract. School board president Christine Moss said that she was surprised by this move, and actually opposes Dansby's resignation. "I really appreciate your service of 40 years to this district," she said. "I do respect your right to resign from the Fort Worth ISD superintendent position, but I do not agree to your resignation."
"I think it's the right thing to do for myself and for my family at this time," Dansby said after the meeting. "I've worked with this district 40 years and I'm very fortunate to have this job, and I leave it with no regrets."
The terms of Dansby's separation agreement will be made public on Tuesday.
"I've taken a real critical job with this district and changed things and made it for the better, so I'm fine," Dansby also said. "I want to thank each and every one of you for letting me serve in this capacity, in this school district."
