Dallas Toddler Grazed By Bullet During Shooting

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - According to officials with the Dallas Police Department, an 11-month-old boy was grazed on the knee by a bullet after someone opened fire on a minivan. The incident happened at about 11:40 p.m. Sunday night in the 1600 block of Cheyenne Road.

Carlos Cordova, 31, was taken into custody for the shooting Monday afternoon. Cordova, who DPD spokesman Sgt. Warren Mitchell said is a known Tango Blast gang member, was found in a residence in the 4300 block of Gus Thomasson Road.

"He surrendered without incident," Mitchell said.

Cordova, driving a maroon Dodge vehicle, fired multiple shots into the driver's door of the minivan. That minivan was being driven by 22-year-old Juan Gomez. Also in the minivan were 22-year-old Esther Chavez and her three sons, ranging in ages from 4 years old to the 11-month-old victim. Mitchell said it appeared that Gomez was Cordova's target. He did not comment on a possible motive.

Gomez sped away from the scene to an area of South Dallas near Malcolm X Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue. The shooter did not follow. Chavez noticed the injury when she and the kids were exiting the shot minivan.

The 11-month-old was rushed to Children's Medical Center with a fractured leg and had to undergo surgery. Mitchell said the child is doing well. None of the other passengers were injured during the shooting.

Cordova was booked into the Lew Sterrett Justice Center for Injury to a Child and Aggravated Assault. Each warrant came with a $100,000 bond.
