Dallas Strategic Director Says Education Fast Tracks Careers
Amanda Lewis Hill is the director of strategic development at Lewis Public Relations. She earned her bachelor's degree in journalism from Baylor University in Waco. She developed her work experience in marketing and communications handling energy, technology and transportation clients.
Why did you pursue a master's degree?
"As my career progressed, I realized I needed a better understanding of finance, economics, business development and other disciplines that weren't addressed in my liberal arts education. Those things can be learned on the job, but an MBA would fast track that knowledge and allow me to move forward quicker."
What would you tell someone who is considering returning to school to earn a master's degree?
"Getting an M.B.A. – particularly as an established professional – is an investment in you. It's a substantial commitment, even if you choose to go back part-time or through an executive program. It takes buy-in from the most important people in your life. Make sure your significant other and boss are on board. Tell your friends about your pursuit. You need a strong support system to get you through."
What was the biggest challenge you faced when pursuing your master's degree?
"I chose to go through The University of Texas at Austin's executive M.B.A. program. That meant working full days and going to class most of the weekend. When you're invested in your career, it takes enough energy to give it your all at the office. I would work a long day, eat a quick dinner and study most of the night. It's tough on your family. It's hard for friends to understand why you can't hang out. Sometimes you just want to zone out in front of the TV. For two years, my life revolved around work and school."
What was the biggest reward for earning the master's degree?
"Part of my role as director is to understand the agency's current financial and business health and direct strategy for future growth. My M.B.A. is a powerful tool. Not only do I know the backend of our business, I also have a deeper understanding of how our clients operate."
