Dallas Stars Players React To Peverley's Collapse
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Watching as a Dallas Stars player collapsed on the bench during a game was tough for fans, but even harder for Rich Peverley's teammates.
The 31-year-old hockey player has a pre-exhisting heart condition, and missed the start of this season.
Team doctors were close at hand when Peverley collapsed at the beginning of the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets at the American Airlines Center on Monday night, and were able to revive him.
Former Stars player and TXA analyst Brent Severyn was standing near Peverley's wife, when she heard the news.
"She was walking in and she was asking, 'Is it Rich? Is it Rich?' She didn't know. People wre coming to assist her and keep her off to the side while they were giving him medical attention," said Severyn.
Severyn says NHL players are tough, but not without heart.
"We're all bred and taught to be very tough in our sport, but we care about people. It's what hockey players are known for," said Severyn.
Monday night's game was suspended, but the team traveled to St. Louis on Tuesday to take on the Blues.
Captain Jamie Benn says the team is trying to focus, but their thoughts are with their friend and teammate.
"We need to focus on what we need to do to get these points. We're in a big playoff race, but we'll be playing for Rich tonight," said Benn.
"Some things you can't control. For a guy to have heart problems -- Peverley being one of the guys with the biggest hearts -- sometimes bad things happen to good people," said Tyler Seguin, who played with Peverley for the Boston Bruins.
The Dallas Stars coach, general manager, and team doctors will hold a press conference to give an update on Peverley on Wednesday at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
