DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A man was shot late Monday night in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas, and it all unfolded in front of his young child. The shooting took place at around 10:45 p.m. near the intersection of Scyene Road and Prairie Creek Road.

According to investigators, the incident began with an altercation. A 26-year-old man was with his son in their car, waiting to meet with the boy's mother. He pulled up to another vehicle, thinking that it was the mother's car, and exchanged words with the driver. A passenger in the backseat of the suspect car rolled down the window and opened fire.

The victim was struck once in the stomach, but he did not remain at the scene.

The man drove himself to a fire station -- located more than a mile away -- to seek help. That drive is estimated to have taken  about three minutes. Paramedics at the station were able to assist the victim. He was taken to Baylor Medical Center at Dallas. There has been no word on his condition. His name has not been released.

The entire situation happened with the victim's toddler sitting in the backseat of the car. The child was not hurt, but was taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas just to be checked out. He has since been released to a family member.

Police have not given any information about a possible suspect in this shooting. The case is still under investigation.
