Dallas School Named Best In The Nation
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A high school in Dallas has been ranked number one in the nation for the second year in a row. U.S. News & World Report has released its list of the Best High Schools in the country, and the School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center in the Dallas Independent School District received the top honor.
The publication reviewed more than 21,000 schools, and rated them based on how effectively each campus educated its students and prepared them for college courses. "Top schools, they score the highest in college readiness," explained Robert Morse with U.S. News & World Report. "They've also been top performers on their state assessment tests."
Morse said that the list also looked at how well schools performed on educating minority groups and students from lower socioeconomic classes.
Principal Mike Satarino was humbled by the honor. "There's very few times that people who work really hard in education, such as our students and teachers, that they get the kudos for what they do," he said, giving much credit to a superintendent whom he worked with 29 years ago. That is when Satarino learned a triangle for success. "You have a faculty that are passionate about teaching, teaching students that are passionate about learning, supported by parents who want that teaching and learning process to work."
The Texas Education Agency has given the School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center an 'exemplary' rating every year since the Dallas school opened in 1990. "We've been rated number one by Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report six out of the last eight years," Satarino said. "These teachers take it as a challenge. The students love the ranking. They work hard to keep it, and I'm just very proud of them."
