Dallas Pulls Out All The Stops For RNC Site Selection Committee
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - This week could determine whether Dallas will play host to the 2016 Republican National Convention – and the tens of thousands of visitors it will draw.
The site selection committee arrived at DFW Wednesday, greeted by Dallas Cowboys' cheerleaders.
Committee Chair Enid Mickelsen warned she wanted to make sure the host city is willing and ready for a convention.
"It's something that's tough for the community to put on. It's expensive. It's time consuming. It's a big investment"
The committee is staying at the Ritz Carlton in uptown, where Wednesday afternoon they heard an overview of the city's proposal to host the 2016 convention.
Billionaire Ray Hunt then hosted the committee for a private dinner at the Hunt Oil Building, where both he and Mayor Mike Rawlings spoke.
Outside, the Dallas skyline glowed red, white, and blue, with the American and Texas flags displayed across the face of the Omni Hotel and "RNC 2016" scrolling over the top of Reunion Tower.
Thursday morning, committee members will tour The American Airlines Center, the proposed venue for the convention.
They'll also get a look at AT&T stadium, which has been ruled out for the main event, but could host other gatherings.
The committee arrived here from Denver, considered by many to be the Dallas' stiffest competition.
Colorado's capitol boasts cooler summer temperatures, a beautiful mountain backdrop, and a chance to woo the swing state.
But, Dallas says it has the money... 60 million dollars pledged mostly by private donors.
"We'll really choose it on the basis of which offers us what we think is the best pkg for the best convention. Not just for delegates, but the message that we want to present to the country. This is our chance to re-introduce people to the Republicans party and introduce them to our nominee," said Mickelsen.
