DPD To Hold Vigil For Officer Slain By Oswald
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - With the National focus being on the JFK memorial ceremonies this Friday, the Dallas Police Department is planning on honoring one of it's own that was also lost on that fateful day.
Officer J.D. Tippit was on patrol in Oak Cliff on November 22, 1963 following the assassination of President Kennedy when he came across Lee Harvey Oswald.
According to reports, Tippit saw Oswald walking down 10th Street and stopped to ask him a question. Witnesses say Oswald shot Tippit four times. Oswald was later arrested in the Texas Theatre a few blocks away.
On Friday November 22, 2013 - exactly 50 years later - the Dallas Police Dept. and the Dallas Police Association will hold a candlelight vigil at 6:00 p.m. at the intersection of 10th and Patterson to honor the fallen officer.
Officer Tippit's widow, Marie Tippit, is expected to attend the vigil along with the DPD Honor Guard, the Dallas Police Department Choir, and other Honor Guards from across the state of Texas.
