DALLAS (CBS11) - Extra eyes are coming to some of Dallas' highest-crime areas as the police department will be expanding its surveillance camera network.
In the coming weeks, 90 new surveillance cameras will be installed in the following proposed nine targeted areas.
1. Hampton & Ledbetter:
2. Elsie Faye Heggins & Scyene Rd
3. Maham & Spring Valley
4. Royal & Skillman
5. Lake June & Buckner
6. Julius Schepps & Central
7. Samuel & Buckner
8. Wycliff & Lemmon
9. Forest & Dennis
This is phase two of an effort by the police department to help reduce crime in troubled areas with cameras. The police department currently has 257 surveillance cameras.
The cameras that have been in place over the past five years have proven to be valuable assets, according to the city. Since June of this year, Dallas police says the cameras have led to 65 arrests.
The 90 new surveillance cameras will cost the city $1,039,140.
While some has raised "big brother" concerns, many welcome the extra eyes.
"It's a weapon we can use," said Dallas resident Arnold Robinson. "I think it's a great idea. We should put them at every intersection."
Four months ago, the Dallas engineers said his SUV was broken into at his officer near Forest and Josey in northwest Dallas. This is one of the nine target areas that the city plans to install cameras.
Had the cameras been up four months ago, Robinson said his SUV might have never been broken into.
He said, "If we put that technology to use, we can put a dent in crime."
