DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas police are searching for a suspect for the deaths of two men after responding to a shooting call early Sunday morning.
Police identified the suspect as 34-year-old Melvin Jackson.
Police questioned neighbors overlooking the parking lot at the Hidden Ranch Apartment Homes hoping to find more information on the shootings that left two men dead.
Christina Spoerl recently moved into the neighborhood next to Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, and she was surprised to hear two sets of gunshots late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
"We heard a few shots, and then nothing really went by by it, and then at one o'clock we heard it again, and then we saw lights outside our window, and just cops were everywhere," Spoerl said.
Willie Barry lives right above the area witnesses said the gunman fired shots leaving bullet holes in at least one apartment.
"First set of shots sounded like a guy that was in his car, and he shot, and he took off, and then the second set of shots, they were closer, but I couldn't really tell where they were coming from," Barry said.
A witness said the shooter pulled up in a car with two other men, and shot 42-year-old Brashaun Boyce and 39-year-old Gerlando Halstied.
"They were some good dudes, man. I don't think nobody deserves to die. At the wrong place at the wrong time," the victims' friend, Antion Stephens said.
Police said Boyce died at a local hospital, but Halstid never made it that far.
"I came out, but the police wouldn't let me come out 'cause he was laying here, and then they came up and took his body on back downstairs," Barry said.
Now neighbors worry the shootings could be a sign of more violence to come.
"Right now that we just moved in, it kind of makes me not want to be here anymore to be honest," Spoerl said.
