Dallas Police Say 7 Robberies In Katy Trail Area Are Connected
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas police say it looks like the same two men have committed more than a dozen robberies since May 4, and seven of them were on and near the Katy Trail.
Officers knew of the likely connection on Friday, police say, but chose not to alert the public about it until three more robberies happened over the weekend.
According to information the department posted today on its Facebook page, last Friday investigators figured out that 11 recent robberies had probably been committed by the same two men. Of those 11, four happened on or near the Katy Trail.
On Saturday, police say, there was another robbery on the Katy Trail. And two more happened there Sunday. That's a total of 14, with half of them in the Katy Trail area. Two were on the Katy Trail itself and five others happened nearby.
Only today did the police department alert the public.
The department gave this description of the suspects:
"The first suspect is described as a black male, approximately 20 to 30 years old. He is 5'8 – 6'2 tall and weighs 150-160 pounds. He has been armed with a blue steel semi-automatic handgun. The second suspect is described as a black male, approximately 20 to 22 years old. His is 5'8 -5'10 tall and weighs approximately 160 pounds. He may have a gold tooth and moles near his eyes. He has been armed with a silver colored semi-automatic handgun. The suspect vehicle is gray/silver 4-door sedan. The vehicle may be a Chrysler or Chevy Impala."
Police say in response, they have added patrols on the Katy Trail.
As for the delay in notifying the public about the apparent connection between the crimes, police say, "The Police Department must continually balance the need to inform the public against releasing information that could jeopardize the investigation and potential suspect identification."
