DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Dallas are continuing to investigate a murder-suicide that left one of their own officers dead. It happened just after 6:00 p.m. on Saturday night, when authorities found Officer Larry Tuttle killed at a Lake Highlands apartment complex.
But there are still a lot of questions about what happened to the off-duty officer.
The initial investigation indicated that a woman shot and killed the officer before turning the gun on herself. Police said that Tuttle knew the woman, but her name has not yet been released.
There was a 6-year-old child inside of the apartment at the time of the shooting, but she was not hurt. That girl is now in the care of Child Protective Services.
It was a neighbor who heard the gunshots and called 911 on Saturday night. "I heard a few shots -- not sure exactly how many," recalled Trui Mitchell. "Then, I heard a female saying, 'Oh, my God. Oh, my God.' Then, a few more shots -- two or three more shots."
Tuttle had been with the force for six years, working in the city's south central division.
"It's hard to believe that they were alive 24 hours ago," Mitchell said Sunday. "They were moving around, doing things. Now, they are deceased, and their families have to deal with everything that goes along with that."
