Dallas Officer Survives Shooting, Bullet Lodged In Jaw
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A Dallas police officer was wounded Monday when a man shot at him.
The officer was still in his car at the time.
Dallas Police Chief David Brown says the officer, who he identified as 66-year-old Ron Workman, was arriving on a scene at a North Dallas apartment complex when the suspect shot at him through the windshield of his patrol car.
The bullet struck the microphone an officer wears to record audio on his car's camera, it then ricocheted and lodged into his jaw.
Workman managed to identify the suspect while bleeding, calling in the description to dispatch.
According to officers at the scene the suspect eventually shot and killed himself. The suspect has been identified as 19-year-old Bryson Alexander Howard.
Workman was taken to a Plano hospital for treatment. The bullet is still lodged in his jaw.
Chief Brown stopped by the hospital to check on Workman, and told CBS 11 News doctors are unsure if the bullet can or will be removed.
Brown says the department is truly blessed considering the tragic consequences that might have been.
Workman, 66, is a 10-year-veteran of the Dallas Police Department.
