Dallas police officer, capital murder suspect shot at Oak Cliff apartments
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A Dallas police officer was shot in the foot Wednesday afternoon at the Bahama Glen apartments by I-30 and Loop 12.
"Next thing you know, I just hear shots going and it was shot after shot at least 30 or 40 rounds," said apartment resident Chloe Garcia. "My first concern was there was a school shooting."
The capital murder suspect, who DPD spokesperson Kristin Lowman said opened fire first, was also shot. Police later identified the suspect as 18-year-old Joey Fraire.
"This was a high risk apprehension, which is what our fugitive unit does for a violent offender," Lowman said.
Officers spotted a vehicle linked to Fraire and tried to box it in before shouting commands at the occupants to surrender.
"The driver did exit the vehicle [and] was taken into custody," Lowman said. "The suspect did not exit the vehicle and did not listen to commands."
Police say Fraire got out and fired a gun hitting one officer in the foot while officers returned fire. The officer was treated and released hours later from Methodist Dallas Medical Center.
Chopper 11 was over the scene as first responders performed CPR on Fraire. They worked on him for quite some time as he lay motionless on the grass. He was eventually transported to the hospital, where police say he was pronounced dead.
No bystanders were injured during the shooting.
Police haven't released details about the crime Fraire was wanted for.
