Suspicious Package Investigated At Dallas Police HQ
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Dallas Police Department's headquarters in downtown was placed on lockdown Monday morning, and people inside were asked to move to a safe location inside of the building, after reports of a suspicious package near the north entrance.
Asst. Chief Randy Blankenbaker explained that a city courier noticed the item at around 9:00 a.m. on Monday morning. She reported it to building security. The package was described as a clear glass bottle with a clear liquid inside, along with a note of some type.
A police sergeant sent an email to the building's employees, telling them to avoid the area. Several officers and other workers congregated outside of the building. Other workers left the area entirely. However, people could be seen walking back into the building at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday morning.
The department's bomb squad attempted to inspect the package. Photographs show heavily protected officers looking over some sort of object on the ground near a doorway. A high-ranking official said that the material inside "doesn't appear to be serious." Blankenbaker confirmed that the clear liquid turned out to be water.
As a precaution, both Lamar Street and Belleview Street surrounding the police building were blocked, but all roadways have since been opened back up to regular traffic. The note has police officials believing that this package was intended to be some sort of hoax. The incident remains under investigation.
