Dallas Police Hiring More 911 Call Takers
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Dallas Police Department is now hiring. Beginning on Friday, the department will start testing applicants who are interested in becoming 911 call takers. The move comes as part of a big round of changes taking place following the attack and killing of a Dallas woman, and what some have called a slow response to her call for help.
The testing is set to take place for three days at the Dallas Police Headquarters. A full page ad on the DPD's website offers additional information.
The yearly salary is between $33,000 and $36,000 a year, but there are a number of prerequisites. You must have a high school diploma or GED, no felony or Class A convictions, and no Class B misdemeanor convictions in the past 10 years.
A total of 25 newly promoted police officers have already been moved off of the streets and into the 911 call center. Chief David Brown said that this move will keep residents safer.
The family of Deanna Cook demanded answers after they discovered her body inside of her home two days after she called 911 for help. That has led to a number of changes in Dallas, including this effort to hire more 911 call takers.
