DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A spokesperson for the Dallas Police Department has confirmed that an officer shot and killed a man, who they say was armed, after a traffic stop in the Oak Cliff area.

An unnamed officer tried to pull over the vehicle after receiving information that the license plate displayed did not match the car being driven.

Lieutenant Latoya Porter, with the DPD Homicide/Special Investigations Unit, said the situation deteriorated quickly after the car was stopped in the 3600 block of West Davis Street. "One of the individuals exited the vehicle and ran with a handgun," she said. "The officer pursued that individual while giving loud verbal commands."

According to Porter, the shots were fired after the officer chased the suspect south into a residential area on North Kramer Street. "At some point that individual turned with the weapon, toward the officer, and the officer fired his weapon striking the suspect."

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said that only one officer fired shots and they aren't sure exactly where the suspect was hit.

There were other people in the car with the suspect at the time of the incident, but neither they nor the vehicle were at the scene after the shooting. Police are actively looking for those people, who may have left in the suspect car – a gray Nissan Sentra with paper tags.

Investigators are talking with potential witnesses, but are also asking anyone with information about the incident, deceased suspect or individuals with the suspect who fled to scene to call 214-671-3661.
