Dallas PD Attributes Slow Response Time To Caller's Accent
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -- Dallas Police say the heavy accent of a store manager delayed their response to a robbery and shootout at a local business on Sunday evening.
The 911 center received a call from an individual reporting a robbery in the 4800 block of Bernal Drive at 11:00 p.m. According to Dallas PD, the caller had a very heavy accent and was speaking very quickly.
The operator had difficulty understanding the caller and did not hear the words "shot" or "shoot". The call was therefore listed as a robbery and forwarded to the police dispatcher at 11:02 p.m. Police did not respond to the scene until 12:14 a.m.
LISTEN TO THE 911 CALL
Police say the delay in response was due to officers already working a number of cases, including an active shooter call, a major accident, a burglary in progress at a residence, and a shooting.
At 11:07 p.m., another call came in reporting an individual shot in the 5800 block of Bernal Drive. Officers arrived on scene at 11:14 p.m. During the investigation, officers suspected that the shooting victim may have been involved in some type of criminal activity.
When officers responded to the initial 911 robbery call, the business doors were locked and no one was at the location. An employee of the business was notified and returned to the store.
Police reviewed the surveillance video and were able to link the shooting victim to the attempted robbery. The individual was charged with Aggravated Robbery. A second suspect was identified and taken into custody.
Three additional suspects involved in the robbery are still at large.
According to Dallas PD policy, officers should have arrived on scene within 12 minutes.
