Dallas Officials 'Commit' To Public Education
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - It was a closed-door session with some of the most powerful public officials in the Dallas area: Mayor Mike Rawlings, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, State Senators Florence Shapiro and Royce West, and the newest leader of Dallas schools, Superintendent Mike Miles.
For 45 minutes, the group listened to a presentation provided by Todd Williams, the Mayor's Education Liason. His message: To improve academic achievement for Dallas' future, there must be a willingness for everyone to get involved.
Williams is leading 'Commit,' a Dallas County initiative targeting broader investment in public education, from cradle to eventual career. "We need more people to care," Williams answered, when asked about his education campaign.
With Rawlings' influence, the 'Commit' campaign brought together top political leaders from the region, with most of them vowing to collaborate with the Dallas Independent School District and 14 other area school districts to get volunteers, mentors, business financial contributions and others to join the 'Commit' initiative.
