DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Dallas came under fire outside of an Oak Cliff apartment complex early Tuesday. The incident happened along Argentia Drive at around 1:30 a.m. and the suspect was ultimately shot by officers.

According to authorities, officers were responding to a call about a man who was trying to kick down the door of an apartment unit where a woman and baby were inside.

Shortly after arriving, officers found themselves ducking for cover when the suspect fired at them from an elevated position.

One officer returned fire, striking the man at least once. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, but investigators said that his injuries were not life threatening. No officers were hurt, but a squad car was struck by a bullet.

Residents at the apartment complex said that, while nobody was seriously hurt, the incident was scary. "It smelled different as soon as I walked outside. I'm like, I'm going back in the house," said Marquis Crawford. "I don't really know what's going on. Started to walk over here, but I don't want to be part of the crime scene."

"I didn't know what was going on," said Dezha Anderson. "It made me kind of scared a little bit, because I don't need nothing happening to me when I'm walking outside."

A special investigations unit from the Dallas Police Department was called to the scene. Crime scene detectives were also there early Tuesday to process evidence left by both the suspect and the officers.
