Dallas Officer Fires Shots At Burglary Suspect
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Another Dallas police officer has been involved a shooting. The unidentified patrol officer fired multiple rounds at a burglary suspect on Monday morning outside of a northeast Dallas hotel, according to authorities. There were no injuries.
A spokesman for the Dallas Police Department said that officers were responding to reports of a burglary in a residential area near Jupiter Road and the LBJ Freeway. The described car, tied to the suspect, was found at the Executive Inn, located near the intersection of Northwest Highway and the LBJ Freeway.
Undercover officers, deployed to special detail in the area, reportedly watched the suspect enter the stolen car. A patrol officer pulled in front of the suspect. The suspect put his car in reverse, according to police, and slammed into the undercover officers. Police spokesman Sgt. Warren Mitchell said that is when the situation escalated. "The officers tried to apprehend the suspect," Mitchell said. "The patrol officer, feeling threatened, pulled his weapon and fired multtiple rounds."
Nobody was hit by the gunfire. The suspect was taken into custody. No names have been released.
The police deparment's special investigations unit and internal affairs are both assigned to the shooting incident.
This is now the fifth incident this year where Dallas police officers have discharged their weapons without striking any suspects. There have been 12 officer-involved shootings in the city this year where suspects were hit, eight of which have been fatal. The most notable recent shooting was that of 31-year-old James Harper, shot dead last month during a fight with a Dallas police officer. That incident drew a large, angry crowd to a south Dallas neighborhood.
