Dallas ISD Task Force Reviewing Campus Security Measures
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - After last week's deadly school shooting in Connecticut the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) has taken additional steps to make sure every school in the district is safe.
Dallas ISD spokesman Jon Dahlander said, "Our police department has gone out and created its own task force to review all of the safety plans and security procedures at each one of our campuses. They've been visiting those schools all week long."
So far Dahlander says inspectors have noticed some things that will need to be changed. "They are finding some things that can be corrected easily," he said. "And then they're also kind of looking at things from a larger perspective to try to make some longer-term recommendations to make sure that all of our students are safe."
Some of those short-term changes include examining the various entry points at each school and making sure that there aren't too many doors open at any given time.
The tragedy that happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School has left the country shaken and decisively more aware of the presumed safety of the nation's young people.
"Everyone is on high-alert based upon what happened last week, and we want to make sure that everyone is safe and secure," Dahlander said. "Students can't learn if they don't feel safe and secure at school."
For now DISD police are continuing their assessments. Dahlander says their complete list of recommendations will be most likely be complete early next year.
