Dallas ISD Students Going Back To Class
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Summer officially ended on Monday morning for students in the Dallas Independent School District. A new school year began as kids crowded buses and went back to class. Superintendent Mike Miles plans to tour campuses on Monday just to make sure that everything runs smoothly on day one.
Miles was at Billy Earl Dade Middle School, which is named for one of the first African American administrators in the DISD. It's a brand new campus that, unlike the old school of the same name, feature state-of-the-art features. "It makes you feel good that you're going to a brand new school, like, just now built," said eighth grade student Taqueria Thursuy. "Makes it better."
The superintendent stated that accountability will be measured by the quality of instruction, student achievement results, and performance and achievement at each school. "The quality of instruction has to be high," Miles said. "We finished the year off last year really well, and I think we're going to have just as strong a year this year."
However, Miles would not discuss the ongoing investigation into whether or not he influenced a DISD contract, and allegations that he later interferred with an internal investigation. "I can't really talk about that," he said.
The focus Monday is on the students, according to Billy Earl Dade Middle School principal Alecia Cobb. She said that the faculty is ready for the new school year, and that morale around her campus is high.
