Dallas Home Invasion Ends With Deadly Shooting
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas police spent hours at the scene of a home invasion and deadly shooting on the city's southeast side.
The shooting happened just before 11 a.m. at a house in the 7300 block of Vallejo Drive.
CBS 11 News has learned the 52-year-old homeowner was at the residence, with his adult son, when he heard a knock on the door and saw three young people he did not recognize. When the homeowner did not answer the door the three "teenage looking" suspects went around to the back and began beating on a door there.
The homeowner, who at some point apparently armed himself, called 911 and was on the phone with an emergency dispatcher while the suspects attempted to make entry into the house. After several attempts the back door was kicked in and the homeowner opened fire. One of the suspects was hit in the head and died at the scene. That teenager was later identified as 14 year old Luis Avila.
The two other suspects, ages 13 and 14, ran after the shot was fired, but were both captured after about half an hour.
The homeowner was questioned by police and released pending a Grand Jury referral. Neighbors describe the man as friendly and active in the community.
Because of the ages of the remaining two suspects their names will not be released. Both of the boys will be charged with burglary.
Sources tell CBS 11 the teen suspects were enrolled at John Hood Middle School, but had poor attendance records. Monday afternoon the school sent home letters for parents detailing the events involving the students.
