Dallas High School Group Stuck In New York
NEW YORK (CBSDFW.COM) - A group of Dallas high school students are having to make the best of an extended trip, all because of Hurricane Sandy.
The group, the Mock Trial team from Bishop Lynch High School, took part in the Empire Mock Trial competition this weekend at New York's Kings County Supreme Court building in Brooklyn.
13 students, 2 coaches and their advisor all took part in the competition.
The team was supposed to return to Dallas Monday, but as of Sunday night, team members have been told the earliest they would be able to leave New York would be Wednesday afternoon.
The team has been staying in a hotel near Times Square, so Sunday evening members were exploring the city, hours before the hurricane makes landfall.
Mock Trial team coach David Post told CBS 11 via Skype the students are taking the delay all in stride. "I think we're excited in a lot of ways, one of them being to see this event. It's going to happen right before our eyes."
The students are staying 60 flights up, so flooding has not been a concern. They've been assured the storm won't affect the hotel's power.
While they are having fun, they aren't free from responsibilities. "We're just going to hang out at the hotel the next two days and do homework online that our teachers send us," said student Savanah Dickinson.
Coaches have kept anxious parents back here at home updated--and so far so good for these stuck students.
