Burns notified the city of his decision this week, and City Manager Mary Suhm made the announcement Friday.  His retirement will take effect on September 1.

Burns has been chief for five years.  His time at the top of the department has been somewhat controversial.  He's the target of a federal sexual harassment lawsuit by a former assistant.  And last year, the website eBossWatch.com named him the worst boss in the entire country.

Suhm says Assistant Chief Louie Bright will be the interim chief, but adds that Bright "is not interested in the job permanently."  She says the city will start looking for a new chief soon.
