Dallas Drug Smuggler Gets 20 Years In Prison

DALLAS (AP) - A convicted felon from Dallas has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in a deadly drug smuggling and weapons case.

A federal judge in Dallas on Monday sentenced 33-year-old Jose Inez Zapata. Zapata last August pleaded guilty to using and discharging a firearm during a drug trafficking crime and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Investigators say Zapata in 2011 shot and killed a person during a marijuana deal in a parking lot.

A Mesquite police officer in 2012 tried to stop Zapata as he drove a stolen truck. Zapata led officers on a chase, eventually stopped, then tried to disarm an officer but was arrested. Two guns and counterfeit cash were seized.

Zapata has previous convictions for aggravated robbery and aggravated assault on a public servant.
