Dallas Cowboys Team Headlines: Romo Stepping Aside For Dak Prescott
By Shawn S. Lealos
The Dallas Cowboys (8-1) have made a huge decision and for the first time in over 10 years and Tony Romo will be the backup quarterback for the team that he holds most of the franchise records for. What could have derailed the Cowboys season has been put on the shelf for now, as Tony Romo has agreed to step aside for the sake of the Cowboys' chemistry.
Romo speaks out
Tony Romo expected to start a new season this year and lead the Dallas Cowboys back to the playoffs. He got a brand new starting running back in Ezekiel Elliott and the future looked bright. However, Romo was injured in the preseason and many fans believed that his injury ruined another season in Dallas. Instead, fourth round draft pick Dak Prescott started, made the most of the gift of a legitimate running back and has Dallas on top of the NFL.
In what could have been a Civil War, Romo has taken the high road to keep the Cowboys rolling through the 2016 NFL season.
"I feel like we all have two battles, or two enemies going on," Romo said in his press conference on Wednesday. "One with the man across from you; the second is with the man inside of you. I think once you control the one inside of you, the one across from you really doesn't matter."
What Does the future hold for Romo?
While Romo may be willing to remain on the sidelines while Prescott continues his amazing rookie season, what does that mean for the future of the Cowboys' record-holding quarterback? Romo believes he can still play, and if the Cowboys stick with Prescott from here on out, there is no way Romo plays backup the rest of his career. Tony Romo could retire or he could ask for a trade. That could hurt Dallas, who could be one injury to Prescott away from pain and suffering at the quarterback position yet again.
ESPN broke down the teams that could trade for Romo, and many of them could provide Dallas with some great draft picks to continue to build their defense. Teams like the Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets could provide Dallas with a lot of draft picks, but would Romo want to finish his career on a potentially losing team?
What about Ezekiel Elliott?
It might not matter who the starting quarterback is for the Dallas Cowboys if they lose Ezekiel Elliott. The NFL is still investigating domestic abuse allegations against Elliott. Regardless of what the courts decide concerning charges against him, the NFL can suspend him if they want to. There is no need for guilt when it comes to the NFL passing out suspensions, and they seem to be really ramping up the investigation against Elliott. If the Cowboys lose Elliott, they still have Alfred Morris and possibly Darren McFadden, but neither man can do what Elliott has done so far. This is something to watch as the playoffs near.
