Dallas County School Buses To Get Cameras
DALLAS (AP) - Dallas County motorists who fail to stop when a school bus extends its red stop sign may soon get a $300 ticket.
A Dallas City Council ordinance passed Wednesday allows cameras to be installed on 1,700 Dallas County school buses to catch the scofflaws.
Officials say child safety is their main concern.
Dallas County Schools proposed the initiative two years ago and installed cameras on six buses during a one-month study. The study found that one to 10 drivers illegally pass a stopped bus during each bus trip.
Dallas County Schools board president Larry Duncan says the study's findings were a "nightmare" given that 60,000 students ride daily buses.
The Dallas Morning News reports the program's backers expect the anticipated fines to cover the camera's installation cost.
