Dallas County Reports 14th West Nile Related Death
DALLAS COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) – A fourteenth person in Dallas County has died from West Nile Virus related health issues.
Officials with Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) have confirmed that the individual lived in the 75062 zip code.
It was a week ago Wednesday that the last Dallas County West Nile death was reported.
Since the first of the year, Dallas County has reported 335 human cases of West Nile infection, the most in North Texas.
The Texas Department of State Health Services reports this is the worst year ever for the West Nile virus in the state, with the number of cases expected to rise through mid-October. Symptoms of the virus can take two weeks to appear.
Dallas County has fought mosquito infestation with ground and aerial spraying, but still say the West Nile threat should be considered a major public health concern.
The Dallas County Department of Health and Human Services has asked people to use the D's method when fighting West Nile:
- Use insect repellents that contain DEET
- Drain any standing water
- Dress in long, loose and light-colored clothing and
- Take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing from Dusk to Dawn.
