Dallas County Reports 11th West Nile Death
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The total number of Dallas County deaths related to the West Nile virus increased by one on Tuesday. Dallas County Health & Human Services confirmed that an 11th person has died from the illness.
The patient reportedly lived in the University Park area (75225), but officials have not said if any underlying medical conditions played a part in the fatal outcome. Additional information about the patient was not provided, as is standard in these cases for confidentiality and privacy reasons. Prior to this, the most recent Dallas County death related to West Nile was reported on August 13.
Texas has seen a wide majority of the country's West Nile cases, with most of those being in North Texas. Officials have said that about 25 percent of the nation's West Nile cases are in Dallas County. The county has confirmed more than 260 human cases of West Nile so far this year.
This latest death comes less than a week after Dallas County started aerial spraying. Various cities -- including Dallas, Garland, Addison, University Park, Highland Park, Mesquite and Richardson -- were included in the plan to attack mosquitos by air. When weather allowed, airplanes have been coating the county in pesticide, hoping to kill off the bugs that spreading the virus.
