Dallas County Is Destination For Most Texas Workers With Long Commutes
ADDISON (CBS 11 NEWS) - More people are driving to Dallas County for work than any other county in the state, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Bobby Woolcock drives to Dallas County from Rockwall County. He's been driving that route so long, his odometer gave up.
"I think it just got to where it was like, 'You know what? You're driving every day. I'm not going to keep up with you anymore.' So, it broke about five years ago," he said.
The commute from his home in Royce City to his job in Addison is a little over 45 miles.
"That's roughly an hour and a half. And that's on a good day when it's nice and sunny," he said.
Lots of Texans have super-sized commutes. But, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Dallas County has more than 507-thousand commuters coming-in from another county, the most in the state.
Harris County is second with more than 413-thousand Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington also have the highest number of Mega Commuters, that is people who drive more than 50 miles and 90 minutes one way.
AAA says those cities are where the jobs are. Bobby's been at his 13 years.
"This is where my work is. So the thing is, you have to get there. So, get there however way you can," he said.
He gets there his trusty 1997 Nissan pickup.
He said, "I'm going to be nice to her. I'm going to say she's about 300,000 miles right now."
Nationwide, there are 600,000 mega-commuters who travel 90 minutes and 50 miles to work.
10.8 million travel an hour each way.
Rail travel accounted for 11.8 percent of workers with long commutes. Other forms of public transportation accounted for 11.2 percent.
