Dallas County Aerial Spraying Starts Thursday Night
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - At a press conference late Wednesday, Dallas County health officials said aerial West Nile spraying will start Thursday night at 8:30.
The cities that agreed to the aerial spraying are:
- Addison
- Dallas
- University Park
- Highland Park
- Mesquite
- Coppell
- Carrollton
- Richardson
- Grand Prairie
- Farmers Branch
- Garland
The cities that declined the spraying or did not respond to the county by the deadline are:
- Sachse
- Irving
- Rowlett
- Wylie
Aerial Spraying will begin with the cities of University Park and Highland Park along with an area a few miles north and south. All of east Dallas, including the Greenville Ave. neighborhood and White Rock Lake, will be sprayed Thursday night as well.
The main reason why aerial spraying will begin shortly after 8:30 pm is the behavior of the targeted mosquitoes.
"The target mosquitoes that we're primarily after are active during the first hours after the sun goes down" said Doug Carroll, Clarke Mosquito Control.
The planes will fly above the rest of the participating cities Friday, Saturday and possibly into Sunday. The order of these cities has yet to be determined
Ground spraying in the Park Cities and North Dallas is suspended in order to prepare for aerial spraying. The area designated for spraying consists of approximately 49,000 acres.
Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins says there could be a second round of aerial spraying sometime next week.
"That will be depending on the results of the first spray and the weather," Jenkins said.
According to officials, the spraying will only be delayed due to the weather conditions at the scheduled start time. Two planes will fly for approximately two to four hours deploying the aerial spray from roughly 200 feet in the air.
A meeting is scheduled at 11:30 am Thursday with health officials from the Center for Disease Control, the state, Dallas County and mayors from several cities scheduled for aerial spraying. The location of the meeting has yet to be announced.
