Dallas Convenience Store Sells $1M Powerball Ticket
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Nobody in Texas won the $580 million Powerball jackpot. But, four people in Texas won a million dollars for getting five of the six numbers right. And, one of those people bought their winning ticket from a convenience store in Dallas.
The 7-11 at 5123 West Lovers Lane has been unlucky this past year. They've been robbed or stolen from half a dozen times. But it looks like their luck has changed now that someone won a million bucks from a lottery ticket they purchased at the store.
Colan Mayfield is a frequent customer who usually buys his lottery tickets there. Only, this time, he didn't.
"Oh, I cannot believe that. I cannot believe I missed that," he said.
Today, he's kicking himself.
"Something told me to buy one yesterday. I don't know why I didn't buy it," he said.
Daniel Lewis wishes he'd picked some better numbers. Checking them on his smart phone, he realized he didn't even match one.
"I have won nothing!" he laughed. "But, I will keep playing," he said.
Word of the winning million dollar ticket spread through the neighborhood.
Everyone was talking about it.
"Wow! Do you know who it is?" Alicia Clark asked.
We don't yet. But we do know they'll take away less than a million dollars.
Daniel Lewis calculated it in his head. "After taxes, it's what? $463,948.12?"
Still, that's a good chunk of change.
"I think I would share it and donate it. I think I'd still work," Alicia Clark said.
"Take a little vacation and buy a piece of rental property," Daniel Lewis said.
"I told a friend, I'd pay off his house. And, I told another friend, I'd look into buying a golf course," Ben Friedman said.
The 7-11 franchise owner doesn't get a dime from the million dollar winnings. He would only get a cut if a customer had won the big Powerball jackpot.
He does get a sign from the Texas Lottery Commission saying his store had a lucky winner. He hopes it will bring in more customers.
For any cash, he and everyone else will have to wait until next time.
