Dallas Considering Changing Garage Sale Ordinance
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Getting a permit from the City of Dallas to have a garage sale could soon be cheaper and easier, for some people.
This week Dallas City Council will be discussing a new ordinance that would totally remove the $15 fee for the first garage sale permit and increase the cost for a second permit to $25.
City councilmember Dwaine Caraway said the change is meant to help people who have a garage sale once or twice a year. "Those folks using it as a business, well we certainly have to make some necessary adjustments to keep it from becoming a business on every street corner, every single day, every single week."
There are other restrictions that the council is also conserving easing. One of the most noticeable changes would be to actually make yard sales legal. Currently Dallas residents can only hold sales "inside the building or garage, or on the patio of the premises" of the permit location.
Caraway said changes to the ordinance would make things easier for those who follow the rules. "You have those people that are complying, but you still have some that are not complying. At the end of the day we're going to find relief for those that are complying."
If approved the Occasional Sale ordinance would also increase the number of garage sale signs that can be posted on private property from one to five. "We can see clearly that it does not have be as stringent as it was once proposed," Caraway said.
According to the City of Dallas, some $160,000 is lost every year in connection with city garage sales.
