Dallas City Hall To Host "Justice For Trayvon Martin National Day Of Action" Rally
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - A rally is scheduled for Saturday at Dallas City Hall as part of Rev. Al Sharpton's "Justice For Trayvon Martin National Day of Action."
The fallout from the not guilty verdict for George Zimmerman continues, even here in North Texas.
Dr. Freddy Haynes III, Pastor at Friendship West Baptist Church, made the announcement alongside several North Texas pastors.
"If you are terrorize, stalk and track down an unarmed black teenager and kill him, he will get blamed for his murder and you will walk free," Haynes said. "America is on trial."
Sharpton is urging cities across the nation to organize their own rallies on Saturday. They are being organized, in part, to pressure the Department of Justice to seek a civil rights case against George Zimmerman.
"We are in the belief that justice can still be served. We brought thousands of signatures on Tuesday to Washington D.C. to give to the Justice Department to say, 'Yes. We want you to pursue civil rights charges against George Zimmerman,'" Haynes said.
Several Dallas dignitaries were on hand to show support.
"It's not enough for white people in this town or in this country to sympathize from afar. You can't just say so in your heart, you have to move your feet," said George Mason, Senior Pastor at Wilshire Baptist Church.
The rally begins at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 20, on the Dallas City Hall Plaza.
