Dallas City Council To Vote On Gas Drilling Site
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The debate over natural gas drilling is heating up again on Wednesday. The Dallas City Council is expected to vote on whether or not to give one company the green light to start drilling. The city has gone back and forth on the controversial issue for years now.
The company requesting the zoning permits is called Trinity East Energy. It needs 12 votes from the city council in order to start drilling on a piece of land in northwest Dallas, very close to Irving. But the proposed site is designated for a park and located just 1,500 feet away from a residential area. That is adding fuel to this debate.
Environmentalists and community activists are opposed to drilling in such close proximity to homes and schools.
It looks unlikely that the permits will be approved. Reports suggest that Mayor Mike Rawlings and some city council members have signaled their opposition to the proposal. A super majority of 12 votes is needed to pass the zoning permit request. The Dallas Plan Commission has recommended a 'no' vote.
