Dallas Car Crash Leaves 2 People Dead
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A car crash in Dallas on Monday night has left two people dead and an 9-year-old girl fighting for her life. The crash happened at about 9:30 p.m. in the Pleasant Grove area. According to police, a driver ran a red light at the intersection of Military Parkway and Jim Miller Road.
The driver was heading westbound on Military Parkway in a black pickup truck. Police said that he had been out celebrating his birthday on Monday night. After failing to stop at a red light, he smashed into three other vehicles. Witnesses and authorities on the scene both said that, after the crash, the driver staggered around and had slurred speech. Police believe that he was drunk and attempting to flee from the scene. The driver was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas with a possible broken wrist.
One of the vehicles that was struck contained three people inside. The impact from the crash wrapped the vehicle around a nearby power pole. Two adults -- one male and one female -- were pronounced dead. The female has been identified as 43-year-old Lashun Russell of Dallas. An 8-year-old girl was ejected from the vehicle and taken to Children's Medical Center of Dallas in critical condition. Police are trying to determine if the two killed adults were the little girl's parents.
The driver of another struck vehicle was transported to Baylor Medical Center Dallas in good condition with unknown injuries. The driver of the last struck vehicle was not taken to the hospital and seemed to be okay when authorities arrived on the scene.
The alleged drunk driver, later identified as 34-year-old Leodegario Juarez, has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault.
