Dallas Budget Ready for Council Review
Months of proposed budget cuts will soon be laid out on paper for the Dallas City Council. Until now it's all been ideas, but the Morning News reports that by the beginning of the weekend the council will know City Manager Mary Suhm's plan for addressing the city's 130 million dollar budget shortfall. 200 parks and recreation department jobs are rumored to be on the chopping block, and for the first time in recent memory, the ax will fall on the police and fire department. The Dallas Police Association says a nearly 2 percent pay cut over 26 weeks will make up for 5 proposed furlough days and there won't be as much hiring in the coming year. The city council will discuss the cuts before approving the budget next month. Even with all the sacrifices, in the end residents may still face a property tax increase.
