Dallas Arboretum Adding Farm-To-Table Garden

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A new farm-to-table area is now being constructed at the Dallas Arboretum. A two-acre swath at the botanical garden is being transformed into an area called "A Tasteful Place." Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday morning, with work expected to be complete by this time next year.

Heavy equipment will be brought in after Monday to continue progress on this $8 million project.

The new garden will include an orchard with fruit trees and a pavilion for cooking classes and demonstrations. Visitors will be able to stroll through the new garden alongside professional chefs, learning how to grow and pick their own fruits, vegetables and herbs.

"We feel like it's important for folks to not only know how to grow flowers, but healthy food as well," said Dave Forehand, vice president of gardens with the Dallas Arboretum. "It's become a real concern for people -- where the food comes from, how it's grown."

The new orchard and vineyard are expected to open in the fall of next year.
