Customers Loyal When Buying Powerball Tickets
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - If you didn't win the big Powerball jackpot Wednesday night, maybe you don't need to pick different numbers, you just need to pick a different store.
Drawing after drawing, players keep returning to the same stores to buy tickets. It's not the big new stores in a good traffic pattern drawing them in, it's small stores in places like the Quick Shop #1, the Diamond C Store, and Chuck's Grocery, according to the Texas Lottery, which keeps statistics on their top sellers.
Chuck's ranks as the top seller in the Dallas South region and, after one trip inside, you understand why. A sign advertises the stores three jackpot payouts. An entire wall is covered with pictures of five-figure winners. Buyers line up behind two counters and one machine to buy tickets, drawing in first-timers like a man who only wanted to be known as Kevin.
"He keeps talking about how they keep winning," he said, after asking for instructions on how to play Powerball. "So, I want to see if they keep winning."
A top-three seller in the Fort Worth region is in Keller. Lisa Wong has owned the store on Keller Parkway nearly 18 years. Stacks of winning tickets hang from a turn-style display inside. The store's biggest payout so far is $20,000. Customers said that they don't know if its good marketing, or if the store has anything to do with the winning.
"But it might," said Luba Lezy as she was buying a ticket. "So, therefore, here I am today. And why not."
In the Dallas North region, it is Quick Shop #1 on Forest Lane that holds down the top spot. Manny Alvarado, who runs a restaurant inside said that the line will stretch out the door on big jackpot days. Players return week after week, and new ones are drawn in by the pictures on the wall of past winners holding paychecks.
"We're going to be selling tacos here in a little bit," Alvarado said. "Thank God the lotto's making somebody rich today -- me."
