Custody Of 40 Dogs Awarded To SPCA Of Texas
KAUFMAN COUNTY (CSDFW.COM) - An animal owner near Kemp has agreed to relinquish ownership of 40 dogs to the SPCA of Texas.
Last week Kaufman County Sheriff's and the SPCA went to the property and found that animals were being, with many without food, water or care.
All of the dogs found on the property were infested with fleas, most were very thin and one Great Dane is emaciated.
Some of the dogs were living outside in small, feces-filled cages and pens.
Conditions inside of a trailer on the property were also unkept and unclean. Floors inside the residence were covered with decaying feces and there was a strong odor of urine.
Colby Grady, the Chief Investigator for the SPCA of Texas, explained, "This location has been confirmed to be a former puppy mill."
Animal rescuers also discovered a cemetery on the property where approximately 20 dogs had been buried.
"The owner stated he and his wife bred dogs for many years until she recently passed away," Grady said in a press release. "This is a prime example of the fine line between a puppy mill and animal hoarding."
All of the animals were taken to and have been card for at the SPCA of Texas Dealey Animal Care Center in Dallas.
