DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - An officer with the Dallas Police Department is expected to be released from Methodist Dallas Medical Center soon, after his squad car was involved in a wreck near Interstate-35E and Beckley Avenue in Oak Cliff.

Sgt. Gary Brown with the department's Traffic Division said that the officer was responding to a request for backup, and was attempting to get into the right lanes of traffic on Interstate-35E heading northbound. The officer drove onto a grass embankment. In doing so, the officer's vehicle was hit by a minivan.

No one in the minivan was injured, said Brown. The officer is being checked out at the hospital and is expected to be alright. He was unconscious for a few minutes at the scene.

Brown said that the officer followed proper procedures, but that will still be investigated.

The original call for backup involved a possible stolen car. That suspect got away.
